Major Dimple Singla becomes the first woman army officer to be court martialed for corruption.
Singla, a judge advocate general, has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment for allegedly accepting Rs 10,000 bribe favouring an accused during his general court martial.
This is the first time a woman army officer has been court martialed for corruption.
Major Dimple, a Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch officer, has been facing trial for allegedly accepting Rs 10,000 for favouring an accused during his GCM (Section 69 of the Army Act for committing civil offence).
She was also accused of violating good order and discipline (Section 63 of the Army Act) when she suggested a defence lawyer to accused Havildar Chandran, who was facing a General Court Martial (GCM).
She was also accused of improperly visiting an Army officer - a defence officer in Chandran's case - and asking him not to divulge information to media regarding the GCM.
She was arrested by the Army authorities on February 1, when she failed to attend the proceedings, and released later on the orders of armed forces tribunal.
